"And Don't Come Back"--Recalling a little California town's actions during Internment
The City of Davis, California acted forcefully to support the Internment of Japanese persons in Davis, California during the continuation of hostilities, and went further to demand that they not be allowed to return even after the cessation of hostilities.
The Council commended the Internment by the military authorities, and further urged the amendment of national laws to prohibit the return of Japanese to Davis and other parts of California.
Resolution No. 1 Series 1943 declared:
WHEREAS … the City Council of the City of Davis … believing further that a return of said Japanese Nationals to the State of California, after cessation of hostilities, should be prevented by enactment or amendment of the laws of the United States of America;
NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Davis, hereby commend the action of said Military Authorities in evacuating said Japanese Nationals and hereby urge such legislation or amendment of the laws of the United States of America as will prevent the return of said evacuees after cessation of hostilities.
(emphasis added)
Resolution No. 1 was passed unanimously on June 21, 1943. It was initiated by Mayor C. A. Covell.
